Event Description:
(Burlington, VT) - STEEL MAGNOLIAS, written by Robert Harling and directed by Kathryn Blume, opens Thursday, October 7 and runs through Sunday, October 10 at the Black Box Theatre at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center on Lake Street in Burlington. A 1987 off-Broadway hit and star-studded, Oscar-nominated film, Steel Magnolias is about the funny, prickly, devoted relationships between six vibrant - and very different - women. Set in a beauty parlor in rural Louisiana, Steel Magnolias invites audiences to eavesdrop on small town gossip, playful bickering, and the doling out of alternately sassy and heartfelt advice. Filled with tart, witty dialogue, the play’s journey through the unending cycle of birth and death illuminates both the profound tenderness and unbending strength of these flowery yet nail-tough friends. “It’s kind of like True Blood,” says producer Jennifer Warwick-Sokolowski, “without the vampires.” Steel Magnolias marks writer-performer KATHRYN BLUME’s directorial debut. “I was so honored when the Girls Nite Out team asked me to direct the show,” says Blume. “I told them I’d never directed anything before and they said, “We know. We don’t care. We want you.” Founded in 2010, Girls Nite Out Productions came to life when actresses Jennifer Warwick-Sokolowski and Janet Stambolian determined that the best way to provide more high quality theatrical roles for women was to create the opportunities on their own. Pulling together the production team for Steel Magnolias - GNO’s inaugural venture – both women have been delighted by the commitment and talent of the entire cast and crew. “Everyone has just leapt on board this production,” says Stambolian, who is playing the town’s cranky, dog-loving matron Ouiser. “It’s totally remarkable,” adds Warwick-Sokolowski, who will be playing M’Lynn, the steeliest of the magnolias. “Along with our great team of actresses, we’ve got—among others-- veteran stage manager Sue Steffen, actor John Alexander as our dialect coach, and women’s business icon Nan Patrick doing makeup!” Rounding out the cast of Steel Magnolias are veteran local performers Taryn Noelle, Jane Beaumont Snyder, Ruth Wallman, and Geri Ann Higgins, who will be playing Truvy, the role made famous in the film by Dolly Parton. “I know I’ve got some pretty big…shoes to fill there,” says Higgins, “but Truvy is so funny and well-written, it’s totally worth the effort.” PERFORMANCE DETAILS PERFORMANCES begin Thursday, October 7 and run through Sunday, October 10.
