Vermont
Celebrates Champlain: The Lake, The Land, The People
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey as Vermont celebrates
Champlain in 2009.
2009 will mark the 400th anniversary of when French explorer
Samuel de Champlain traveled by canoe up the Richelieu River and
came upon a lake spanning 120 miles in length and 12 miles in
width. The lake, called “Bitawbagok” by its early
Abenaki inhabitants, was renamed by Samuel de Champlain when he
visited the region in July 1609. Vermont will commemorate this
historic event in 2009 with festivals, pageants, exhibits, performances
and much more.
In 2009, Vermont will celebrate the 400th anniversary of Samuel
de Champlain's first visit to the region. Planning is already
under way for the Lake Champlain Quadricentennial.
