People have celebrated the sun for as long as there have been people – and one of the most important days of the year for those who appreciate that life-giving ball of fire is the Summer Solstice: the longest day of the year. For the Northern Hemisphere, that day is June 21. So if you’re feeling an overwhelming urge to celebrate this weekend and you’re not sure why, it’s probably your innate ancestral memory feeling the burn of centuries of ritualistic tradition. Or you just like to party on the weekends. Either way, we’ve got you covered:




Vermont Lake Monsters vs. Brooklyn Cyclones

The Vermont Lake Monsters are a Single A Short-Season Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. These guys are the real deal – 97 Lake Monsters players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues! Bring the family because the Vermont Lake Monsters’ Mascot, CHAMP, is quite a hit with the little ones – and he does a nightly meet & greet with his fans. So root, root, root for the home team and start your weekend at Centennial Field!

As if the longest day of the year wasn’t enough reason to celebrate this weekend, The Tap Room at Switchback is turning 3! Help Switchback celebrate their 3rd birthday with $3 pints of Switchback Ale & Citra-Pils Keller Bier, live music from the Thunder Kittens, food by Southern Smoke VT, corn hole, life-sized jenga and, of course, birthday cake! Switchback is a unique Vermont beer that originated right in Burlington – and a Vermonter favorite. They put their own spin on their brew by leaving it unfiltered to maximize complexity and flavor and allowing it to carbonate 100% naturally in a special process using the yeast. If you’d really like to earn your cake, join them for yoga on the waterfront beforehand for their Stretch & Sip Yoga series.

If your heart yearns for arts and crafts, head to the Champlain Valley Exposition this weekend to check out the annual Vermont Quilt Festival, one of the top 10 most popular festivals in the state of Vermont. The Vermont Quilt Festival offers contests, classes, presentations, shopping and exhibits for all to enjoy. There’s something for all quilting enthusiasts, whether basting master or design spectator!
